Welcome
[edit]Hello Clovermoss! Welcome to Wikivoyage.
To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.
If you are a Wikipedian, then you may notice some differences in policies and the style of our articles. These include:
- NPOV → be fair (not quite the same thing!)
- be bold → plunge forward
- Village pump → travellers' pub
- External links → We do not use a separate external links section, but incorporate primary links only into the text itself.
- sandbox → graffiti wall
- stub tagging → article status
It may also be very useful for you to check out Wikivoyage:Welcome, Wikipedians. If you need help, take a look at Wikivoyage:Help, or else post a message in the Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub, as a reply below or on my talk page. Thanks for contributing!
If you were wondering, we don't use references here; nonetheless, thanks for your update to Niagara Falls! --SHB2000 (t | c | m) 02:30, 25 May 2024 (UTC)
Listings
[edit]Hey, continuing from our off-wiki conversation about listings, here's a general guide:
- To add numbers on listings, you would need to fill out the
|lat=
and|long=
fields. If they are blank, no number will appear. - Generally coordinates are only added for places that are in a permanent location – it's completely normal for listings for festivals to have no coordinates and therefore no numbering (a good example would be York#Events and festivals).
- If there are multiple listings, but say only the third listing has its
|lat=
and|long=
fields filled out, the third listing will appear as number 1 (as you probably noticed in Thorold). - The numbers are clickable – if you happen to click on them, you'll be taken to the dynamic map in full screen. The main purpose of the numbers is to match them on a map.
I think that's it, but I might have missed something – feel free to chuck me a ping (here on this talk page, in edit summaries or on Discord, whatever suits you) or leave me a message on my talk page if you have any more questions.
Cheers :-).

- Thank you. I appreciate this a lot. Clovermoss (talk) 01:22, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
- @SHB2000: My enwiki instincts may have gotten the better of me. Do these italics mean anything? Should I have kept them? Clovermoss (talk) 00:38, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- No I don't believe so (i.e. italics were erroneous) – cheers for removing them. --SHB2000 (t | c | m) 02:36, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

Question about useable articles
[edit]@SHB2000: I've fleshed out Thorold as much as I could today. Is it still a "useable" article or is it maybe good enough for the "guide" status? Clovermoss (talk) 20:47, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- Oh neat, that article is looking really nice. For guide, I think per Wikivoyage:City article status, it would need a bit longer understand section and coordinates for all listings. SHB (t | c | m) 21:13, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- @SHB2000: How do I figure out the coordinates situation? Because I'm honestly not sure where to check for that. Clovermoss (talk) 21:22, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- There's a couple of tools you can use, but most people either use the "Where is this" feature on OSM or Google Maps (I'm not sure what the relevant command on Windows is, but on macOS I normally control+click, select the coordinates and then paste the coordinates, rounding it to 4dp). --SHB (t | c | m) 21:26, 19 January 2025 (UTC)
- I filled out the coordinates for Thorold. --SHB (t | c | m) 03:33, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
- In "getting around", I would fill out the bus fare for a single ride, whether transfers are available and for how long. If there's a day pass, I will also list that out. I agree with SHB2000 that the understand section needs to be longer. OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:35, 24 January 2025 (UTC)

Difference between eat and drink?
[edit]Hi SHB2000, I have a question again. Should the listing I added here be included in "eat" where I put it because of the ice cream or in drink because of the coffee? Clovermoss (talk) 01:18, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
- It seems like the ice cream is more unusual than the coffee, so I think you made the right call, but it's a judgement call. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:27, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah I think if the place is known for ice cream more than coffee, it belongs under eat but you can go about it either way. //shb (t | c | m) 06:13, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, they had like 20 ice cream flavours and only a few different variations of coffee so eat is probably the safer bet. Clovermoss (talk) 15:02, 12 April 2025 (UTC)
