For articles about Ireland, please use the 12-hour clock to show times, e.g. 9AM–noon and 6PM–midnight. Please show prices in this format: €100, and not EUR 100, 100 euro or 100€. Please use Irish English spelling (which is the exact same thing as British spelling). |

Do we normally use such galleries like that? I don't think having a gallery full of signs is particularly intuitive, all the more for using images instead of text in the speed limits section (which I'll replace in a bit). --SHB (t | c | m) 10:38, 29 January 2025 (UTC)
Done the latter (Special:Diff/5013780). --SHB (t | c | m) 10:48, 29 January 2025 (UTC)
Free images by Fáilte Ireland (the national tourism board)
[edit]I found this website with images of Ireland from Fáilte. I'm pretty sure these can be used here as the terms and conditions state:
"This System is jointly provided by Tourism Ireland, Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Northern Ireland. All Content is free to use as long as these Terms and Conditions and licence rules are followed.
Content must be used only to promote the island of Ireland as a tourist destination.
Content must not be used for the Prohibited Purposes (as defined below) without the written permission of the relevant authority obtained below."
I don't know how to add these here but I'm sure someone smarter than me can figure it out :) I think it has images of quite a few cities and towns so it will be useful for many articles about Ireland not just this one.

- Such images might be OK to use on Wikivoyage, though we would need to read the "prohibited purposes" in full to be sure, but they cannot be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons with such restrictions. So my feeling is, we should avoid the hassle unless we really need photos they have that nothing on Commons covers effectively. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:54, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
- The prohibited purposes in question read:
- "Includes any use in or for Commercial Non-Tourism Related Enterprises; commercial distribution rights, i.e. the right of selling, licensing or sublicensing the Content against a fee to third parties, e.g. through sub-distributors and/or sales agents in various markets and distribution channels. And any use not expressly permitted by the relevant agency in writing;"
- Shame they can't be uploaded to Wiki Commons. I didn't realize that the restrictions made it invalid when I posted this, however I was reading the Commons terms and conditions in the hours after and I realize that now.
- Hypothetically, if I were to reach out to Fáilte via email and be granted permission, would that allow them to be uploaded to Commons? Thanks for your reply anyway. AskMeAboutGalway! :) (talk) 19:14, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
- Oh also, I mentioned in the County Galway discussion a similar resource (https://www.universityofgalway.ie/ineh/gallery/), as far, as I can tell that one can be uploaded to Commons? It is under a Creative Commons license.
- I put it in the County Galway discussion as I thought it was pretty much only images of Galway, but I looked at it a bit more thoroughly and it actually has many images from other parts of Ireland too, so it's probably relevant here as well. - That Creative Commons license looks perfect for Wikimedia Commons. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:40, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
- Did you find out what actual licence they use. The linked page only says "Creative Commons License 4.0". It needs to be CC BY or CC BY-SA, not e.g. CC ND. The clarification on the page ("Notice (Ver. 3)") only tells how to attribute the author. –LPfi (talk) 14:25, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
- It might require interpretation, but the fact that the license is OK is clear:
- Photos Available for Free Use (Including Commercial Use)
- Over 2,000 photos of Ireland, Galway, and the University of Galway campus, captured by Professor Chaosheng Zhang, are available for free use (including commercial use) under the Creative Commons License 4.0. Follow the instructions in the "Notice (Ver. 3)" image. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:29, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
- The wording does not rule out -ND (no derivatives), which would make them unfree. I assume the author has intended to make them free, but they need to specify the licence. –LPfi (talk) 13:41, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Should I post a permission request on Commons? The email of the author is publicly available. I would do it myself, but I'm very unfamiliar with copyright law and I'm generally uncomfortable with writing formal stuff like that. It definitely seems like the author intended it to be 100% free use. AskMeAboutGalway! :) (talk) 15:13, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- The best thing would be for the photographer to contact the c:COM:VRT himself, specifying the precise CC license he means to give the photos, or for you to get an email from him and pass it on to them. Maybe you could email him. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:28, 11 December 2025 (UTC)
- Alternatively, ask them to replace the "Creative Commons License 4.0" with "Creative Commons' License BY-SA 4.0". That should suffice. –LPfi (talk) 09:43, 13 December 2025 (UTC)

- For the Fáilte images, you need a free licence, not just a right to post them to Wikivoyage or Commons. "Free" includes the notion of for any purpose, including commercial redistribution (as far as it comes to copyright; Commons does not mind trademark and personal right issues as long as they aren't included in the licence and don't affect Commons' right to publish the images). –LPfi (talk) 14:18, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
