Vidor is in the Bayous region of Texas. The town is mainly a bedroom community for the nearby refining complexes in Beaumont and Port Arthur. The population was just under 10,000 in 2020, of which about 11% were non-white.
Understand
[edit]Vidor is considered the most racist town in America, with racist activity being common. In the 1990s, Black residents were moved into Vidor, and were persecuted and the residents left soon after. Since, Vidor has been called racist, and the residents embrace it. Segregation ended in the town in 1993, which is very late. Historically, Vidor has been described as a sundown town, a term used to describe racially homogeneous communities, specifically all-white towns, that have shown hostility to people of other races after sunset.
Vidor was founded in 1898 and the city was named after lumberman Charles Shelton Vidor, owner of the Miller-Vidor Lumber Company and father of director King Vidor. In 1913 a company tram road was built. Almost all Vidor residents worked for the company. The Miller-Vidor subdivision was laid out in 1929. Vidor was incorporated in 1960.
