Umuleri is an ancient, significant Igbo town in Anambra State, South East Nigeria.

Umuleri is in Anambra East Local Government Area, known as a major settlement in the Omambala valley and part of the Greater Onitsha Metropolis, famous for its historical Eri clan lineage and the Anambra International Airport, despite past boundary conflicts with Aguleri.

History

Umuleri holds a significant place in Igbo history as a key part of the Eri clan, claiming descent from the legendary founder Eri, with traditions linking them to ancient migrations from Egypt and the Middle East. Its history involves its founder, Adamgbo (daughter of Eri), and later settlers, leading to its name "children of Eri" (Umu-Eri). Umueri's story is intertwined with its sister town, Aguleri, sharing deep ancestral roots and a history marked by both cultural unity and periods of conflict, particularly land disputes.

Geography

Umuleri is located within the Anambra Valley, and bordered by the Anambra River and the Anam communities in the north, Nteje to the south, Aguleri and Nando in the east and Nsugbe to the west.

Climate

Umuleri,has a tropical climate with distinct wet (April-Oct) and dry (Nov-Mar) seasons, featuring hot temperatures year-round, heavy rain in summer, and sunny, drier conditions in winter, typical of the Anambra Basin's rainforest zone with high humidity and rainfall, moderated by its location near the Niger River.

Religion

Prior to the coming of Europeans (the British), Umueri people practised traditional religions, worshipping various deities. However, Christianity became the dominant religion about a century ago. 50% of the town's population are Christian, primarily Roman Catholic, Pentecostal and Anglican.

By land: through different means of land transportation such as Bus, Tricycle, motorcycle or bicycle.

The Umuleri indigenes and visitors can move around the town by using Buses, Tricycles and Motorcycles as well trekking to their various locations (this doesn't require paying transport fare).

Their are some exciting places such as fields for football tournaments among the townspeople, worship centres (for praying service, crusade, night vigil) and hospital/health centre for doctors consultation if you fall sick while in the town.

One of the major occupations of Umuleri indigenes is farming and as such so many farm products are harvested at the end of every planting season. Consequently, food stuffs such as tubers, grains, vegetables are bought at a very cheap price.

Rice, stew or ofe akwu, Garri or fufu/soup, are available in different eateries such as Mama puts, guest house, and market places.

Assorted drinks both local drinks (gin, palm wine, up-wine, water) and foreign drinks (wine, beers soft drinks) are available in the town of Umuleri.

Hostels and guests rooms are conductively available in case one visits and was not able to finish up the tasks in a day.
