Proposal to Divide Kano into Districts

    [edit]

    Hello everyone,

I would like to propose dividing the city of Kano into district articles to help better organize travel information and make it easier for readers to navigate the city. Kano is a large and historically significant city in Northern Nigeria, and breaking it into manageable areas can improve clarity for travelers.

Here is a suggested breakdown of districts:

    • Dala – Known for Dala Hill and traditional markets, the historical heart of Kano.
    • Fagge – A central commercial area with shops and budget accommodations.
    • Gwale – Contains residential neighborhoods and cultural centers.
    • Nassarawa – A mix of administrative offices and modern amenities.
    • Tarauni – A bustling area with local eateries and road transport links.
    • Kumbotso – Suburban and semi-rural, ideal for exploring traditional life.
    • Municipal (Kano city) – The core of Kano, home to government institutions and major landmarks.

Each of these districts could support its own article with listings such as:

    • 3–5 attractions (museums, hills, markets, etc.)
    • 3–5 places to eat and drink
    • 2–4 accommodation listings
    • Local transport details and general orientation

I believe this structure will help showcase Kano's diversity and improve the experience for travelers and contributors alike. I'm happy to refine the proposal based on feedback.

With that many listings per district, I would support, but please create a map or state the boundaries of all the districts. District maps should be static if possible, and making those isn't that simple (I'll post a link to a page showing how to do it when I'm off mobile, or someone else will), but otherwise, if you can define the boundaries or post a link to a map that already has them, someone else might be able to make one. Hi@Ikan Kekek,
Thank you very much for the support and guidance. I appreciate your suggestion regarding defining the boundaries of the districts. I will look for a map that already shows the district divisions of Kano or create a rough sketch to help visualize them. If I manage to find a static map or create one, I’ll share it here so that someone more experienced can help convert it into the proper format for Wikivoyage. Your help and that of the community are truly appreciated! A Sulaiman Z (talk) 19:36, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for adding so much content and being consistently polite and positive. It's really a breath of fresh air. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:40, 4 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
    Map
    Map of Kano

      Dala
Known for Dala Hill and traditional markets, the historical heart of Kano.
      Fagge
A central commercial area with shops and budget accommodations.
      Gwale
Contains residential neighbourhoods and cultural centres.
      Nassarawa
A mix of administrative offices and modern amenities.
      Tarauni
A bustling area with local eateries and road transport links.
      Kumbotso
Suburban and semi-rural, ideal for exploring traditional life.
      Kano Municipal
The core of Kano, home to government institutions and major landmarks.

@A Sulaiman Z: this is what a map of the districts you propose would look like. An important thing to keep in mind if that if a city is split into districts, all of the detailed listings (See, Do, Buy, Eat, Sleep) would have to be moved from the city articles to the appropriate district articles. As Wikivoyage:Huge city article template says:

"It's best to use general descriptions formatted as paragraphs and avoid making point-form lists as individual listings belong in district pages, not here."

Would you be able to do this if the city article were split into districts? Ground Zero (talk) 10:28, 10 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

    Hi @Ground Zero,
Thank you very much for providing this visualization and the guidance. Yes, I am willing to take on the task of moving the listings into the respective district articles if the proposal is accepted. I’ll make sure that the main Kano article focuses on general descriptions only, in line with the Huge City Article Template. I appreciate your support and the clarity you’ve provided so far. A Sulaiman Z (talk) 08:42, 11 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Then I support your proposal. After you create the other district articles, you can move this map into the Kano article, and that will show you in which districts the listings are located (if they have coordinates). Then you will know where to move the listings. Ground Zero (talk) 11:46, 11 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
A Sulaiman Z, thanks for creating the district articles. Would you like to put the map and district list in the article? I'd like to take the merge tags off for Kano/Fagge, but the district articles need to have that type of naming, with "Kano/" first. If you're ready, we can move all of them accordingly to such names. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:01, 15 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
    Hi @Ikan Kekek,
Thank you very much for your message and continued support. I really appreciate the guidance.
Yes, I am fully ready to proceed with moving the district articles to names that follow the correct format such as "Kano/Fagge", "Kano/Dala", and so on. Please go ahead with renaming or let me know if I should do it myself.
I will also work on updating the main Kano article by adding:
    • A map showing the districts (`{{Mapframe}}`),
    • A complete district list using the `{{Districts}}` template,
    • And linking each district properly from the main city article.
Thank you again for helping me learn and improve my contributions to Wikivoyage. I'm happy to continue developing quality travel content for Kano and Nigeria.
    Best regards, A Sulaiman Z (talk) 13:14, 15 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'll move the district names now. Please copy the district list and map to the article. Thanks! Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:13, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
All moved except for Kano Municipal. Should it be moved to Kano/Municipal, so that we don't repeat the name of the city, or does it have to be Kano/Kano Municipal? I call upon your expertise, A Sulaiman Z. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:17, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
    Hi @Ikan Kekek,
Thank you for moving the district pages and for your kind support.
Regarding Kano Municipal, I agree with your suggestion Kano/Municipal is a better option. It avoids repeating the city name and still clearly refers to the central district. Let’s go ahead with Kano/Municipal.
I’ll now proceed to add the district list and the map to the main Kano article as discussed.
    Thanks again for the collaboration!
    Best regards, A Sulaiman Z (talk) 05:33, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Absolutely. I'll make that move. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:27, 17 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
