Songdo (Hangul: 송도신도시, Hanja: 松島新都市), officially known as the Songdo International Business District (SIBD), is a district in Incheon, South Korea, located 30 km (19 mi) southwest of Seoul. Built on 1,500 acres of reclaimed land along the Yellow Sea, the district is home to 170,000 residents and is still under construction, over 30 years (since 1994) since construction began. Although not a typical destination visitors to South Korea will visit, the city offers a welcoming change of pace for visitors, with its walkable streets, abundant green space, and modern architecture that make it a popular weekend daytripping spot for local residents.
Songdo IBD is one of the largest private real estate developments in history. The city seen today was part of former President Lee Myung-bak's efforts to promote green and low-carbon growth for South Korea. Under his initiatives, Songdo IBD was developed as a sustainable, smart city with more then 40% of the total area dedicated for green space (parks, bicycle lanes, and charging stations). In addition, the district is the first in Korea to have all of its major buildings meeting LEED requirements. With the construction of the 12.3-km (7.6-mi) Incheon Bridge in 2009, Songdo became directly connected to Incheon International Airport, and grew rapidly due to the convenience.
Many R&D centers for major companies, including Samsung Biologics and Thermo Fisher, have facilities on the island, and many foreign university campuses have satellite campuses on the island. This has shaped Songdo into being a distinctly unique district in South Korea, with an abundance of high tech buildings, wide avenues, and parks on every corner.

Songdo is connected to the Incheon International Airport by a 7.4-mile-long highway bridge. There are two main bus services from Incheon going through much of Songdo. The more comfortable, but expensive Airport Limousine Route 6777/6777-1 has stops throughout the western part of the island. Routes 303/330 is much more affordable, and has stops along northern Songdo. Both trips take about 20-30 minutes.
Coming from Gimpo International Airport is made possible by the AREX (Airport Railroad Express) Line and Incheon Line 1 via Gyeyang. This journey takes roughly 50 minutes.
Songdo is connected to the rest of Incheon via Incheon Subway Line 1. There are seven stops on the island, allowing easy reach to almost all main attractions. The base fare for the subway is ₩1550, and comes around every ten minutes during the week. The subway opens up around 5:30AM and last train is at midnight. Coming from Seoul, most likely you will connect through Bupyeong or Bupyeong-gu Office via Line 1 or Line 7 respectively. From Suwon or other areas in the Southern Seoul Metro Area, you can connect through Woninjae. After connecting, head southbound towards Songdo Moonlight Festival Park Station to reach Songdo. All subway signs and subway audio are in both in Korean and English, and high volume stations will have Japanese and Mandarin written and spoken. If using a T-Money card, you can get a free transfer from the subway to the bus.
Songdo is also accessible via bus, but in most cases is much slower than the subway, or more expensive (unless arriving from the airport). Some key lines include trunk (blue bus) lines 16 and 58, which connect central Incheon to Songdo every 15-20 minutes between 05:00 and 23:00, and trunk bus line 320 connects Yeongjong Island to central Incheon between 05:00 and 23:00 every 15-25 minutes. The one faster exception will be direct (red bus) line 3002, which connects the Gwangmyeong KTX station to Songdo every 25-35 minutes between 05:30 and midnight, which takes significantly less time than taking the subway.
For getting around Songdo, there are also a variety of city circular (green bus) routes that can take you nearly anywhere needed on the island. All of these routes run roughly every 20 minutes between 05:30-23:00.
Taxis are common in Songdo, but less so than in other parts of Incheon. To call a taxi, you can call 1577-5588. Keep in mind that every driver is not fluent in English, and they will expect a written address in Korean to navigate. If you prefer not to call, you can get a taxi through a taxi calling service like Uber Taxi or Kakao Taxi and select your drop off point on the app. Base fares start at ₩4800 for the first 1.6 km, and increase ₩100 every 135 m. There is also a 20% surcharge between 22:00-23:00 and 02:00-04:00, and a 40% surcharge between 23:00-02:00. T-money cards are accepted on most taxis, along with credit cards, although cash is preferred by taxi drivers, especially on shorter trips.
