Get in

[edit]

By bus

[edit]

From Užice, there is one daily bus in the morning, takes about one hour. The same bus goes back to Užice late afternoon. Ask locals for exact times.

By car

[edit]

Mokra Gora is on a major road between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, so you can easily reach the village by car.

By thumb

[edit]

Hitch-hiking is also an option, i.e. you can visit Tara Mountain and then hitch-hike from Kaluđerske Bare to Mokra Gora via Kremna.

Get around

[edit]

Best done on foot, although two or four wheels may serve well along the main road.

See

[edit]
  • Šarganska osmica narrow-gauge railway (Šargan Eight). Once part of Belgrade-Sarajevo railway, now it's heritage railway mainly for tourists. It runs from Mokra Gora to Šargan Vitasi station (Zlatibor and Tara mountains). It passes some bridges and tunnels. The tracks on the map make a shape of "8" to gain height - quite an engineering feat and unique in Europe. The ride is a popular passtime for tourists, so book early if you want one. The station is a convenient place to start walks, take a train ride, visit Drvengrad and see a small railway museum.
  • Drvengrad (Küstendorf, Mećavnik). Traditional village just next to Mokra Gora conceived by, and home of, Serbian film director Nemanja Kusturica. Drvengrad is clearly visible from Golubići station and easily reachable by road (you park and you pay an entry fee) or by stairs from Šargan Eight station. The village is a nice mix of traditional and modern, wood and stone. It has streets and squares named after people Kusturica likes and admires (i.e. Ingmar Bergman, Diego Armando Maradona). It also has tourist services and modern facilities. Here Kusturica organizes annual international film festival which has interesting selection of films and attracts many people.

Do

[edit]
  • Walk near Šarganska osmica tracks. If you can't or don't want to take a Šarganska osmica train, take a walk on roads and paths near the tracks. You will see much of the same sights, visit intermediate stations (i.e. Golubići station featured in Kusturica's film Life Is a Miracle) and will be able to rest and admire to your will, not bound by train times. Ask locals for drections.
  • Walk to Bele vode spring. A nice one-two hour walk. Start near Šarganska osmica train station, turn left on the main road, then right at next major split, then follow the road with "Bele vode" signs. You go along the little river and reach the place with the spring and an Orthodox church.

Eat

[edit]

The restaurant inside the Šarganska osmica railway station serves traditional food.

Sleep

[edit]
  • Šarganska Osmica Hotel (Konačište Osmica) (inside the Šarganska osmica railway station building). Nice and clean hotel with a restaurant, in an authentic building.

Go next

[edit]
  • Višegrad and Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina have many historic and natural sights and attractions. There is a daily bus in the morning, and you can hitch-hike there as well.
  • Užice has a restored fortress and offers some nice walking around. It is also convienient to go to Bajina Bašta and visit Tara Mountain. A daily bus leaves to Užice late afternoon.
