Minalin Voyage Tips and guide

Minalin is a town in Pampanga. It is the province's main egg producer and is home to an exquisitely carved Spanish-era church and extensive fishponds and wetlands.

Understand

[edit]

Minalin is one of the oldest municipalities in Pampanga, having been established in the 1590s. Despite maps showing it as a landlocked town in the middle of Pampanga, it is actually part of the vast expanse of the Pampanga River delta, which is further highlighted on the ground by the town's layout, which looks more like a spider's web of communities separated by dikes holding back the Pampanga River delta, Manila Bay, lahar from Mount Pinatubo, and the various fishponds. These dikes also form the roadway system through much of Minalin.

Get in

[edit]

Downtown Minalin is bypassed by major highways. Most travelers will enter at MacArthur Highway in Santo Tomas, entering through the San Matias junction marked by the eponymous chapel and following the road until it reaches Minalin. Travelers from Metro Manila usually go to downtown Minalin via San Fernando exit along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and drive south towards Santo Tomas.

Minalin's easternmost barangays are virtually separated from its downtown by the Pampanga River delta. Instead, travelers going there take the NLEX San Simon exit and take a short drive along MacArthur Highway towards Barangay Santo Domingo, which borders NLEX and is fast becoming an alternative commercial hub for its relatively higher location.

Near Baluyut Bridge (Teteng Baluyut) in San Fernando, there are jeepneys servicing Minalin via Santo Tomas, but be prepared to wait up to two hours for the vehicle to fill up, as Minalin is still a sparsely populated town. Fares from San Fernando cost P30, while a trip from Santo Tomas starts at P20. Arriving at downtown Minalin, the main terminal is sandwiched between Minalin Church and the central tricycle terminal.

Secondary roads doubling as dikes connect Minalin with Guagua and Bacolor, but these consist of secluded narrow two-lane roads without much safety barriers.

Stay safe

[edit]

A low-lying town, Minalin is highly susceptible to flooding during the rainy season, which is compounded by typhoons, high tide and periodic lahar flows from Mount Pinatubo. Parts of town are also in danger of disappearing altogether due to rising sea levels.

Stay healthy

[edit]

Due to chronic flooding, medication against leptospirosis (a disease carried by rat urine) is necessary after wading into floodwaters.
