[edit]Gishwati-Mukura nation park is Rwandan newest nation park. it was created in 2015 by the combining Gishwati and Mukura forests.
History
[edit]The park was established to help preserve what was remaining of the Mukura and Gishwati forests while also protecting the Chimpanzee population therein. the park is also home of golden monkey, blue monkeys and L'Hoest's monkeys, before the creation of the park the forest almost faced extinction as a result of human encroachment after the genocide in 1994. Refugees come back and cleared a large part of the forests to build homes and subsistence farming. The forest corridor that connected the two forests to Nyungwe National Park disappeared leaving the chimpanzee population and other wildlife isolated. Over 60% of the forests wildlife spaces were lost by the time the national park was formed. the government entered into a partnership with the wildlife entered into partnership with the wilderness safari to restore what was lost, stop encroachment sensitize the communities about the benefit of the park and turn in into a high end eco tourism site. the government is working with wilderness safaris to introduce chimpanzee trekking, primates viewing and birdwatching. the story of Gishwati-Mukura is another example of how serious the government is bout wildlife conservation.

Primate: the star attraction is the Eastern Chimpanzee, along with golden monkeys, blue monkeys,L'Hoest's monkeys and black and white colobus
Mammals: The park is home to red rivers hogs, black fronted duikers, southern tree hyraxes, servals, and side striped jackals.
Birds: with 232 bird species in Gishwati, hights includede albertine Rift endemics such as the Graues eagle spicies.
Reptiles/ Amphibians: Notable spicies include the Rwenzori three horned chameleon

. Tree species: The forest features over 60 tree species, including indigenous hardwoods like African Mohogany, East African camphorwood and various bamboo species.

Climate
[edit]Gishwati-Mukura National Park in Rwanda has a cool, wet, and humid, tropical highland climate, typical for a mountainous rainforest. Due altitude, daytime temperature are confortable, averaging around 19°C–27°C (66°F–81°F) while nights are chilly, dropping to 11°C–16°C (52°F–61°F). The park is very wet, with rain possible at any time, but it experiences two main rainy seasons from March to May and October to November.
