Many geographical records of India are some of the most breathtaking places in the country. While northernmost and southernmost points have nothing spectacular in themselves, their location make them rather unique places to visit. Meanwhile, highest elevations and bodies of water records are often amazing sights and make interesting tourist destinations or tourist stops.

[edit]Northernmost points
[edit]The northernmost point of India is tricky as it falls under the Kashmir region, and is disputed between India and Pakistan. There are several possible candidates.
- As India claims the entire Kashmir region, the 1 Kilik Pass is sometimes considered within the country as its northernmost point. However, as the mountain pass falls under the area administered by both Pakistan and China, it's very difficult to access the Pakistani side for Indians, if not impossible, due to Pakistan's long-term relations with India. On the Chinese side, the entire valley around the Kilik Pass is closed to visitors.
- However, if considering the Line of Control (LoC) as the de facto border between the two countries, the 2 Indira Col can be considered as India's northernmost point. In fact, the Indira Col is more often referenced within India as its northernmost point than the Kilik Pass, and is a part of the Siachen Glacier in Ladakh, the highest battleground on Earth.
Southernmost points
[edit]- 3 Kanyakumari is popularly considered as the southernmost point of India, and the phrase "from Kashmir to Kanyakumari" is used to express the vastness of the country. However, it's the southernmost point of mainland India if its islands are excluded.
- Whereas the 4 Indira Point on the Nicobar Islands is the true southernmost point of the whole India.
Easternmost points
[edit]- The 5 Diphu Pass in Arunachal Pradesh is generally considered as the easternmost point of India. However, much of the state, including the mountain pass, is claimed by China as South Tibet.
- The 6 Chaukan Pass falls outside the disputed part of Arunachal Pradesh, making it the easternmost undisputed point of India.
Westernmost points
[edit]- The westernmost point of India is somewhere on the 7 Sir Creek, at the India-Pakistan border.
Elevations
[edit]Highest points
[edit]- As India claims the entire Kashmir region, 8 K2 at 8,611 m (28,251 ft) is often considered within the country as its highest peak. However, as the peak falls under the area administered by both Pakistan and China, it's very difficult to access the Pakistani side for Indians, if not impossible, due to Pakistan's long-term relations with India. The Chinese side is also very difficult as it falls under the Trans-Karakoram Tract of Xinjiang, one of the most inhospitable areas of the world.
- Outside of Kashmir, the highest undisputed peak is 9 Kangchenjunga at 8,586 m (28,169 ft), on the border to Nepal. The Indian side of the peak is a part of the Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lowest points
[edit]- The 10 Kuttanad river delta in southern Kerala is easily the lowest point of India, at 2.2 m (7.2 ft) below sea level.
