Gengenbach is a historic town in the Kinzig valley of the Black Forest, known for its well-preserved ensemble of half-timbered houses. Located on the Baden Wine Route (Badische Weinstraße), it serves as a gateway to the central Black Forest vineyards.
Understand
[edit]The area has been settled since Celtic times, with the Romans establishing a presence from 73 AD to 260 AD. A Roman road once connected Strasbourg to Rottweil through this pass. Gengenbach later became a Free Imperial City. Today, the town is famous for its medieval layout and its Town Hall, which transforms into the world's largest "Advent Calendar" during the Christmas season.

Get around
[edit]- The historic town center (Altstadt) is a pedestrian-friendly zone and best explored on foot. Most major sights, shops, and restaurants are within a 5-to-10-minute walk of each other.
- KONUS Guest Card: If you stay overnight in Gengenbach, you will receive the KONUS card from your host. This card allows for **free travel** on all public buses and trains (2nd class, except IC/ICE and mountain railways) throughout the entire Black Forest region. It is a cost-effective way to visit nearby towns like Offenburg, Triberg, or Hausach.
- Bicycle: The Kinzig Valley Cycle Path (Kinzigtalradweg) is relatively flat and well-maintained. Bicycles can be rented at local shops near the station for exploring the surrounding vineyards and neighboring villages.
- Parking: For those arriving by car, several large parking lots (e.g., Parkplatz Kinzigvorstadt) are located just outside the medieval town walls, as the inner old town has restricted vehicle access.
