Calw, the birth place of the writer Herman Hesse, is a little town in the Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.
Understand
[edit]Close to the eastern edge of the Black Forest, in the Nagold valley, it is a wonderful example of a traditional town in the Swabian region of Southern Germany.
Tourist information
[edit]- Calw Tourist Office, Marktplatz 7, ☏ +49 7051 167 399. M–F 09:00–18:00, Sa 10:00–13:00. This is the best place to pick up physical hiking maps for the Hermann-Hesse-Weg or to get advice on current rail schedules for the new 2026 train connections.
Get in
[edit]By plane
[edit]- Stuttgart Airport (STR) is the closest international gateway, about 45–50 km away. From the airport, take the S-Bahn to connect towards Calw.
By train
[edit]Calw is served by two main rail connections:
- Hermann-Hesse-Bahn: Reactivated in early 2026, this line provides a direct link to the Stuttgart S-Bahn network via Weil der Stadt.
- Nagold Valley Railway (Nagoldtalbahn): This scenic regional line runs north-south, connecting Calw to Pforzheim (approx. 25 min) and Horb (approx. 45 min), where you can catch long-distance trains towards Zurich or Stuttgart.
- The main station is just a short walk across the Nagold bridge from the historic town center.
By car
[edit]Calw is accessible via several routes:
- From the A8 (Stuttgart–Karlsruhe), take the exit at Pforzheim-West or Leonberg.
- From the A5 (Frankfurt–Basel), exit at Rastatt and follow the B462 through the Murg Valley for a scenic drive.
- From the A81 (Stuttgart–Singen), exit at Gärtringen or Herrenberg.
- The town is about 30 km from these major motorways; expect a 30–40 minute drive through the winding valley roads.
Get around
[edit]The historic center of Calw is compact and best explored on foot. Many alleys are paved with cobblestones and can be quite steep as the town climbs up the slopes of the Nagold Valley.
By public transport
[edit]If you stay overnight in a registered hotel or guesthouse, you will receive the KONUS Guest Card. This allows for free travel on all regional buses and trains throughout the entire Black Forest region (extending as far as Basel, Freiburg, and Karlsruhe).
By bus
[edit]Local bus lines connect the town center with the surrounding districts. The central bus station (ZOB) is located right next to the main train station.
By car
[edit]If arriving by car, use the parking garages (Parkhaus am Markt or Parkhaus Lederstraße), as street parking in the narrow timber-framed alleys is extremely limited and mostly reserved for residents.
